This is the veiw from the back
This is the front veiw of the box
This is the lady and her arms
The past couple of weeks in DF i have been working on my mechanism which has been a lot of fun. I have done a lot on my toy but there is still a lot I need to finish to comlete my project. I have finished the box and cutting out the ladt and her arms. I still need to cut out the flowers to go around the box and put it altogether and make it move. in last weeks class i cut the arms out but then realised they were too short and would not work so i had to redraw and cut out new ones the would work. this lesson and for homework i will be working on completing my written assignment. after i have finished putting together my toy i then, if i have enough time, paint it and decorate it.

This term in Design Futures we are doing a unit on the computers using Pro Desktop were we are free to create different designs. each lesson we have been experimenting and learning new different things that help us to make 3D objects such as vases which we have been focusing one because this is our assignment project. Mr Ward has been very helpful in teaching me all different techniques on how to make objects bigger, smaller and to scale. Our last lesson i have been working on the written part of the assignment as i have already created my design for my vase. next lesson i have to continue my written task and continue the bag tags we have just started to design.

1. Choose 2 machines that you used in the fabrication of your desk tidy. With these machines in mind, outline WPH&S considerations that must be adhered to when using these machines. Include photographs of your chosen machines (On Guard may be an excellent resource for this question).

Disk and Belt Sander Machine:

. All hair and clothes must be tied back and tucked in to unsure nothing gets caught.
. Safety goggles and aprons must be worn at all times so nothing can get into the eyes and to keep your uniform clean.
. Make sure the area is clear and that no one else is inside the yellow lines to prevent injuries.
. Make sure nothing is loose on the machine and once finished the machine is properly turned off.

Band Saw:

. Safety goggles and apron are worn at all times.
. Only one person is to use the band saw at a time.
. Make sure before using that the blade is in properly and nothing is loose or broken.
. make sure before the machine is switched on that the area is clear and there is not loose pieces of plastic that could flick up and cause injury.

 2.    The material you are using for your desk tidy is called Polymethylmethacrylate (ACRYLIC). It has specific properties and uses.  Choose 2 other common polymers and in table form give their industrial name, common name, properties and uses.

Name
Common Name
Properties
Uses
Polyethylene Terephthalate
PET
Hard, stiff, strong,
In soft drink bottles and other blow-moulded containers.  Also food and non-food containers.
Polyvinyl Chloride
PVC
Hard, solid and ridged
Flooring, Siding and pipes

3.    Extrusion, injection moulding, compression moulding, vacuum forming and laminating are examples of common manufacturing processes used with polymers (Plastics). Choose one process and with the use of diagrams and bullet points outline the process.

Process of Injection Moulding:

·        Clamping - The moving fixed platens holds the mould tool together under pressure.
·        Injection - Plastic materials in form of granules are melted until it is soft enough to be injected into the mould.
·        The melted plastic is then injected into the mould and the shape is exactly copied.
·        Dwelling - After the molten plastic has been injected into the mould pressure is applied to make sure all the cavities are completely filled and there are no gabs or missing spaces.
·        Cooling - The plastic is then allowed to solidify in the mould.
·        Opening - The moving platen moves away from the fixed platen which separates the mould tool.
·        Ejection – a plate, rods or air blast then aids ejection of the complete plastic moulding from the injection mould tool.
·        The mould is cleaned and completed and sent to the factories.

In today's DF lesson I finishes gluing all the big main parts of my desk tidy together except i just have to glue the box on and then all I need to do is make it look good by cleaning it. I will clean it and glue the box on in the next DF lesson then I would have finished completely.

This term we have been doing our desk tidies which are made out of acrylic. First I made my design out of cardboard so I could measure the lengths and so I could make changes if I wanted. After I finished my cardboard deisgn I started my desk tidy. So far I have the base and in today's lesson I glued on the iPad and phone holder. I have got most of my design cut out of acrylic and sanded down except the box which I will have to do next lesson.

Ideation for Desk Tidy

What is the actual different between light of different colours?
The difference between light of different colours is the frequency of the electromagnetic wave that it makes. Each different colour of light has a different frequency and amount of energy that it gives off, as the frequency decreases so does the energy which is why we see each colour differently. Electromagnetic waves are a form of energy absorbed and made by charged particles which travel in a wave like shape which forms the light. Each different colour of light has a different sized wavelength which makes them individual to each other. For humans the range of visible wavelengths is from 400 to 700 nanometers as light. For example the visible blue light has a wavelength of about 475nm, because the blue wavelengths are shorter in the visible spectrum, they are scattered more efficiently by the molecules in the atmosphere.

Define the following lighting terms: ambient light, direct light diffuser, luminosity, energy efficiency, and watts.

Ambient light: The soft indirect light that fills the volume of the room with illumination.
Direct light diffuser: A light fixture, such as a frosted globe, that spreads light evenly.

Luminosity: The condition or quality of being luminous.

Energy Efficiency: Energy conversion efficiency is the ratio between the useful
Output of an energy conversion machine and the input, in
Energy terms.

Watts: The watt is a derived unit of power in the International System of Units.
A unit of luminous power equal to the luminous power of light of a single wavelength.

Comment of Global Warming.
Global warming is caused by what is called the greenhouse effect. This means the suns solar radiation is being trapped in the earth’s atmosphere by gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Which once have come in it is impossible for them to get back out, which result in our earth heating up, causing a lot more problems for our generation. If global warming continues it will continue to melt the ice caps and raise the oceans which cause low lying islands to be destroyed and disappear. Even though people cannot stop everything that is making our earth worse they are at least trying to improve it by using less polluting knowledge and technology to make the earth a lot cleaner and safer for people, animals and plants. Although the oxygen levels may decrease due to global warming putting our breathing at risk and making it really difficult for plants to photosynthesis and help the human race to live on. There are ways we, ourselves, can improve the way we live to help the earth and the people on it and slow down global warming. This is a part of what they teach us in design futures engineering in different ways that we can help and contribute to decreasing global warming.

How can the modern home become more energy efficient with regard to lighting?
The modern home is where we spend most of our time which means we would use the most amount of energy there. The common everyday things that we use or do that use a lot of energy is electricity, such as water and lighting around the house and heating such as anything we use to prepare foods or heat the house during cold seasons. It has been known that people are using way too much energy in the modern household for unpractical things such as using unneeded light and leaving power sources on when they aren’t being used. Companies are trying to make their products better by making them more energy efficient and cutting down on using electricity, by installing windows instead of fans or solar panels which use the suns light and heat and turns it into energy. The little things that people can do to make their household more energy efficient is turning off lights when you’re not in the room or even using candles instead of lights. Also having a fire place instead of actual electricity heating. By doing these small things you will be making a big problem easier to solve.

Research a modern day lighting designer and comment on their contribution to the design world.
James Clar in his early work dealt with analyzing how technology and media work but after he moved to the Middle East it shifted his focus to how technology and media affect. Clar studied film as an undergraduate at New York University focusing on 3D animation. Then continued on to his masters staying at NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program. It was then that Clar moved away from the screen and started working directly with light and creating sculptured lighting pieces. He developed his own system and found he could create unique visual displays. At the beginning of 2011 Clar opened ‘Statellite’ in Dubai, a warehouse space that allows him to build bigger and better sculptured products. Also allowing the public to come and see his finished works and artistic process. Some of Clars achievements include three patents in the US for new engineering systems created while developing his light art work. His artwork has also been included in the Chanel Mobile Art exhibition (Tokyo), The New Museum of Contemporary Arts (New York), The Chelsea Art Museum (New York), The Somerset House (UK), Museum on Seam (Jerusalem), and LV Gallery (Hong Kong).

Finished Desk Lamp

After nearly a term of building and constructing my desk lamp i have my finished product. Designing my lamp i used ergonomics by making sure the light from the lamp doesnt shine in the eyes or distract the user while working. It is also designed to fit onto a small desk without taking up too much room. This desk lamp is designed to be very stable and look neat and nice. The shape of my desk lamp is designed to the light shines across the table instead of directly down, this is for more efficient lighting for the user. i am proud of my desk lamp and think it is a good design and works for my needs.

Todays lesson was on how we are to make our desk tidy and what we are going to use to make it. He showed us all the different shaped plasticsand different ways to make different shapes. Mr Ward showed us how to glue together pieces of acrylic using cerment glue. He also showed us the strip heater ehich he recomended we use instead of the glue becauseee it is more reliable and stronger. He showed us the oven which we would use to bend the acrylic in all different shapes and ways. We learnt how to use the spade drill which makes perfect holes in the acrylic and doesnt chip the sides. these notes should help me with the production of my desk tidy

Today in DF Mr Ward showed us a slid show all about light and how if we didn't have the sun we wouldn't have life and how there is light in everything. He also showed us the different ways light is shown in everything and everyday life. I have decided and drawn my design for my lamp and asked for Mr Ward opinion and he said yes it'll work.

Monday, January 30, 2012

In today's lesson Mr Ward taught us how to do isometric drawing which able us to draw shapes in 3D form. He gave us all a piece of Isometric paper so we could practise drawing 3D shapes. I found it easy to catch on and draw my own 3D shapes, experimenting with different angels and shapes to see what my lamp could look like. I have decided I want to try the square shaped lamp as mine because I think it works as a good lamp and it looks cool and it is chanlenging to figur out, hopefully I will be able to put some picture of the lamp next lesson.

Sunday, January 29, 2012

In today's DF lesson Mr Ward explained all the different designs of the desk lamp that we would be making. He showed us pictures of a heap of different designs and explained which ones would work and which ones wouldn't and what was wrong with them. Last lesson I couldn't get my blogger to work so this lesson mr Ward helped me out and got it to work.
Last lesson was our first DF lesson of the year. Mr Ward explained to us what we would be doing and making throughout the year. He also explained his expectations of our work and behavior. Mr Ward said that this year is going to be really fun because we would be making and learning about different things.
